The Rural Challenge Gender Equality Leadership Program empowers leaders in Country Fire Authority (CFA) brigades and sporting clubs to promote an equal and respectful culture.

Sport and the CFA have integral roles in Australian culture, particularly in rural and regional areas. These organisations can bring people together through a sense of pride, common purpose, commitment and community spirit.

Clubs and brigades can play a key role in shaping positive community attitudes and behaviour. Clubs and brigades can create a respectful and inclusive culture and, by doing so, help increase the participation and satisfaction of members at their organisation.

Gender equality benefits both men and women and has a wide range of positive outcomes, including preventing violence against women.

Clubs and brigades that participate in the Rural Challenge Gender Equality Leadership Program are supported to make positive changes in their organisation.

Our members attended a gender equality workshop, and were then supported to develop resources that met our brigade’s specific needs including a member survey, a gender equality checklist and an action plan. It was great!

All clubs and brigades should do this program!
— Captain, Malmsbury CFA Brigade
The program challenged my own thinking. I loved that we came up with practical ways of improving gender equality at our organisation.
